This web portal/dashboard is provided primarily for visitors in Trinidad and Tobago that are interested in the work of REACT, whereby a compendium of information is collated, however all are welcome to peruse the site. Nothwithstanding the information provided in this portal for convenience, visitors should always refer to the official sources for authoratiive information.
REACT is a voluntary, non-profit, radio communications organization that provides assistance in times of emergencies and disasters. REACT provides radio communications for events such as cultural, sporting and other public and private activities. Events such as walkathons, road races (marathons, 10k, cycling), 4x4 off-road events, car rallies, swim meets, concerts, Trinidad and Tobago Carnival, etc. are engaements in which REACT assists by providing trained radio operators to ensure smooth operations. Our motto is "Public Service Through Communications". REACT started operations using Citizens Band (CB) Radio, and has incorporated all forms of communications such as Amateur Radio (HAM Radio), Family Radio Service (FRS), General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS), Commercial Land Mobile Radio (LMR), and Voice Over IP (VoIP) technology, to name a few. The organization today uses any and all forms of communciation that is available to the REACT Teams in their local areas to provide reslient communications. A key aspect of the organization is in Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR). In emergencies and disaters, such as tropical storms, hurricanes, earthquake, tsunamis, whether sudden-onset or with notice, communications services is one of the facilities that tend to go down or become overwhelmed, and is among the urgent requirements post event, so that relieable and reslient backup communications is needed. That is where REACT comes in.
You can engage with REACT, whether or not a member, by using Zello, a free Walkie-Talkie App that works on any smartphone, tablet or computer (Android, Apple iOS, Windows) using Internet (Ethernet, WiFi, Mobile Data, etc.). After downloading Zello, install and create an account. Join the open REACT Members channel. We have Nets on a Saturday and Monday at 9pm AST (UTC-4) and there is quite a bit of activity from around the world on the channel off Net times. Join in and see what REACT is about. REACT was founded in 1962 in the United States and commenced operations in Trinidad and Tobago in 1964. REACT International, Inc. celebrated its 60th Anniversary, the Diamond Jubilee in 2022.
REACT operates on the baisis of Chartered Teams granted by the parent organization, REACT International, Inc., headquarerted in Gelendale, California. There is the Youth Arm, referred to as Junior REACT for persons under the age of 18. There are REACT Teams in the United States of America (USA), Canada, Philippines, Thailand, Nepal and Trinidad and Tobago.
In Trinidad and Tobago, there are ten (10) REACT Teams, each with its own unique Team Number - 2496 (REACT Trinidad and Tobago), 4928 (St. George County REACT), 4994 (Northeastern REACT), 6005 (REACT County Caroni), 6006 (REACT St. Patrick/Victoria), 6007 (REACT Santa Cruz/Morvant), 6008 (REACT St. Andrew/St. David) , 6009 (REACT Mayaro), 6045 (REACT Tobago), and 6278 (REACT County St Patrick TT), that all come under the umberlla body, the REACT Trinidad and Tobago Council. Trinidad and Tobago falls within Region 9 of REACT International, Inc.
REACT works closely with emergency management agences that are focused on disaster risk reduction (DRR), and first responder organizations. In Trindad and Tobago, these include the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM), Tobago Emergency Management Agency (TEMA), the Disaster Management Units of the Municipal Corporations (DMUs) as well as Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS), Trinidad and Tobago Fire Service (TTFS) and the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force (TTDF), CERT, EMATT, and Red Cross, just to name a few. REACT has several MOUs with other organizations such as the American Radio Relay League (ARRL) and the Trinidad and Tobago Amateur Radio Society (TTARS).
REACT encourages its members to continually enahance knowledge and skills, and to this end offers serval courses and certifications via REACT Training. Courses include Emergency Communications, a course co-devleoped the ARRL, Net Control Operations, Message Handling, Land Search and Rescue, etc. Additionally, training to become a licensed Amateur Radio Operator via the FCC system is avaialbe. Consider taking our free amateur radio training course that is open to the public for the Technican Class, General Class, and Extra Class, that essentially prep candidates to take the HAM exams and get your ticket. Topics taught include: Electrical Principles, Electronic Components and Circuits, Radio Wave Characteristics, Antennas and Feedlines, Amateur Radio Signals, Amateur Radio Station Safety, Station Setup and Operating Controls, Station Equipment, Operating Procedures, Rules and regulations. When all else fails, there is Amateur Radio, which provides a variety of modes, equipment and radio frequency (RF) spectrum. Many REACTers are licensed HAMs. REACTers tend to utilize all amateur radio bands (HF, VHF, UHF) and modes (SSB, FM, FT8, D-Star, C4FM/YSF, DMR, P25, Echolink, etc.) In Trinidad and Tobago the amateur radio callsings begin with the prefix 9Y or 9Z.
REACT also encourages the taking of FEMA NIMS (National Incident Managment System) ICS (Incident Command System) courses 100, 200, 700 and 800. Other training such as Skywarn and CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) are highly recommended.
